Wordpress was originally developed as a blogging platform to help people without too many web design skills set up a simple blog online with the minimum of fuss. Since its first incarnation WordPress has evolved into a powerful, and easy to use, content management system that is used by over 200 million websites worldwide.

How does WordPress work?

The backend is accesed through a secure login screen WordPress’ user freindly workflow allows users to very simply and easily update text and images on their website. in addition to this WordPress users can utilise WordPress ‘widgets’ that are available for free to add video and music to your site, create excitng and dynamic galleries and for literally thousands of other applications.

WordPress and Sweetlime

Sweetlime use WordPress when ease of use is one of the main requirements in the design brief. With WordPress CMS Sweetlime can create neat, functional websites that are not only fully accessable but also have a noticable less steep learning curve than the other CMS that we use Joomla. After the design and build, and your site has been put live, Sweetlime can provide the basic training needed for you to start getting actively involved with your web content. We find that most clients get the basics very quickly and are making changes to their content confidently very soon after iniial instruction. Also, as you would expect from a system with over 200 million users, the breadth of help availble online for WordPress users is huge, with a knowledge base including forums and user guides that you can turn to instantly for any guidence.

What is Joomla CMS?

By admin | Published June 23rd, 2010

Joomla CMS, Like WordPress, is a content management system that can be used by your company to facilitate the efficient organisation of content on your companies webite. Origianlly design by develpers, for developers Joomla is, at the present time, a more powerful CMS than WordPress and is often used to manage larger and more complicated web develpment projects.

How does Joomla CMS work?

Like WordPress, the Joomal Backend is accessed via a secure, password protected, login screen. Joomla allows multi-user access so changes can be made anyone that has the correct autherisation. Different levels of access can be asigned and all changes made to your website in Joomla can be tracked. As Joomla is a more powerful application than WordPress out of the box, and has been designed more with develepoers in mind, the backend may seem slightly more complicated at first. Joomla has steeper learning curve than WordPress but the rewards once it is mastered, are greater for your business.

Joomla CMS and Sweetlime

Many companies and organizations have requirements that go beyond what is available with a basic WordPress instalation. The main difference between WordPress and Joomla is scalability. Whereby WordPress was origional created to be a blogging platform, and has evolved to become a solution for simple content managemnet, Joomla was written by web developers for web developers. Sweetlime uses Joomla CMS when a client presents us with a project that will require significant and frequent revisions, will need to contain a large volume of date or a lot of different types of data, or will require specialized functionality. In short, we use Joomla for projects that are just that little bit bigger. Joomla is highly extensible and can be expanded easily to cover the vast majority of our clients reqauirments. Joomla’s powerful application framework makes it easy for developers to create sophisticated add-ons that extend the power of Joomla into virtually unlimited directions. Most of these add-ons are freely available and can be used to add true functionality to your web presence.

Some examples of websites that can be built utilizing the core Joomla framework:

  • Custom product catalogs
  • Integrated e-commerce systems
  • Business directories
  • Reservation systems
  • Communication tools

Content Management Systems (CMS)

By admin | Published June 23rd, 2010

Traditionaly, once a website had been completed and put live any changes to the content of that site could only to be made by someone fully versed in web design practice. If you needed to make small changes to a website’s text, or swap an image, you would have to engage the services of a web professional, a costly way to complete what should essentially be a simple admin job.

Sweelime Design can offer your company a solution to this problem. By building you a website incorperating a modern content management system we can put the the power to shape your web marketing and brand image back into your hands, saving your company time and money.

What is a Content Management System?

A Content Management System, or CMS, is a back office system whereby the client can login to a password protected area (www.mywebsite.com/admin) and gain full access to all of their website’s content. Most CMS are scalable and can be fully customized to meet the clients exact requirements. From simple text changes and page additions to menus changes and complex re-arrangements to site structure, all content management systems offer the client a hugely increased level of control over their website. Most companies choose to use their CMS to upload new banners, update news pages and image galleries and generaly alter their website copy; leaving major site structure changes to either web literate staff in house or their chosen website developers.

The two main CMS that Sweetlime Design use are WordPress CMS and Joomla. You can find out a bit more about both of these systems on our WordPress websites page and our Joomla websites page.
