What is a domain name?
“This is the name that identifies an Web site. For example, “microsoft.com” is the domain name of Microsoft’s Web site. A single Web server can serve Web sites for multiple domain names, but a single domain name can point to only one machine. For example, Apple Computer has Web sites at www.apple.com, www.info.apple.com, and store.apple.com. Each of these sites could be served on different machines.”
What is a TLD?
A TLD is a ‘Top Level Domain’ and is part of a domain name. It is the letters that follow the domain name itself – for example, on www.example.com the TLD is .com. There are three different types of top level domains:
(gTLD) Generic Top Level Domains – .com, .org, .net etc
(ccTLD) Country Code Top Level Domains – TLD’s which are specific to a country, for example .uk for the United Kingdom, .dk for Denmark, .ca for Canada etc
(uTLD) Unsponsored Top Level Domains – For example .biz .info are used for various different services
Registering multiple domain names
Registering multiple domain names is common practice, whether it is simply to give your users more options when it comes to what they type in to reach your website, or to stop competitors taking these domain names to divert business, and traffic, away from you. In many cases a company will register the same domain ‘name’ with different TLD, for example businessname.com, businessname.net, businessname.co.uk etc
Choosing a domain name
There are many factors to take into account when choosing a ‘good’ domain name. Firstly, it must be appropriate for yourself or your business. It is no good having a short domain if it’s totally irrelevant, as potential visitors will have a hard time finding or remembering it. The length of the name can also be a factor in a visitor remembering it and therefore returning to the website.
The domain name itself can also be a factor in the increasingly important search engine optimisation (the process of tweaking the content and layout of a website in order for it to rank highly in search engines to bring in visitors from this source). If your business name contains keywords about your business then this is ideal. However, if your chosen name does not give any clue to the products or services offered then it is often a good idea to include an additional word in the domain. For example, a joinery called John Doe Ltd would benefit from www.doe-joinery.co.uk rather than a more generic www.johndoe-ltd.co.uk etc.
